Inspired by a book, Charles Ceyrac decided to serve a cause that was important to him: to protect and promote the remarkable heritage of remarkable towns and offer them an alternative to rural desertification by creating "The most beautiful villages of France" label.

In 1982, 66 mayors joined the idea of Charles Ceyrac in the adventure of "The most beautiful villages of France"; thus the association was born.

There are today 158 villages in 14 regions and 70 counties. It aims to preserve and enhance the heritage of its member villages to increase their reputation and promote their economic development.

The Luberon is fortunate and counts Ansouis, Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes and Lourmarin which all meet the very selective criteria of "The most beautiful villages of France" label.

In 2018, the village of Roussillon was a candidate on the TV show "The favorite village of the French" and took the third place on the podium.
